Since we talked about expertise last week, this week I’m going to talk about failure.
I own my own business and one of the things that I’ve learned over the last three years is that failure is a part of my success. I’ve had the opportunity to fail in some of my ventures related to my business. During the time, it may have felt very difficult and I thought, “Oh my God, I tried something that isn’t going to work, or isn’t going to benefit my business. I’ve lost money. I’ve lost opportunities related to that”. What I realized now is that failure is a part of success because it gives you a perspective on how to do things differently. It gives you an opportunity to learn and to see that you are resilient and that you bounce back and that you have in you the capabilities to do anything that is within your realm.
What I’ve learned is that failure is a good thing, because without it, you don’t get the opportunity to learn and to avail opportunities for yourself and others through those failures. For example, when I started trying to really push one of the communities that I was building, I didn’t do the research and I didn’t do what I needed. Then I realized that part of that is because ,going back to the jack of all trades, I was not the expert. It made me inquire what other things I needed. One of the major things that I got out of it was a business coach. Once that happened, I was able to focus my purpose related to where I had failed in the past and ultimately see there were things that I didn’t know that I couldn’t do on my own and I needed support to do.
Without that failure, there would have been no opportunity to learn, to expand my thinking and perspective and to ultimately get the support I needed. You can use support for trying to get committed to a new goal, any type. You use that to realize that the failures and the obstacles that you might experience are learning opportunities for you to be able to do better.
