I am here to tell you that whether you like it or not, you are thinking and telling yourself something. All of us have what is considered self-talk. We are most likely enforcing that self-talk by what we tell ourselves we are capable of doing or not capable of doing. I believe affirmations give us a starting point to change our thinking.
It ultimately is our thinking that is the foundation of our behaviors, our actions, and our habits so what we tell ourselves is extremely important. Here’s an example. If I say, “I am lazy,” or “I am angry,” then I’m giving myself permission to accept that as part of my identity and then ultimately I start to respond as if those are the things that I’m capable of doing. So then when I don’t get up in the morning or when I don’t have the things I want in my life I can go back to reinforcing what I’m telling myself whether I believe it or not.
Now, what if we took that negative form of thinking and made it a positive? What if we said, “I am capable,” “I am enough,” “I am energetic,” “I am moving throughout my life and changing, growing and learning, and able to adapt to new situations.” All of a sudden, those things begin to motivate you. They are simply a foundation for change. They are not the change. What affirmations really do is give you a foundation towards change. It changes your mind which ultimately gives you the energy and motivation to change your life. One of the best things in terms of getting motivated or energized is to analyze and assess your thinking so that you can determine what you need to say to yourself and reinforce in your life. This week I would like for you to challenge yourself to monitor what you are stating after “I AM” in your thinking. if you wake up in the morning you say something like “I am so exhausted,” then all day long you’re most likely going to feel exhausted.
I’m not telling you to trick yourself or to convince yourself, but what I am saying is consider changing your thinking. If you consistently do anything, you’ll notice changes in your habits and behaviors and then ultimately, you’ll notice changes in your life. So, this week, I’m giving you permission to say that “I am happy,” “I am blessed,” “I am extremely excited about life,” “I am energetic and I am moving towards the change that I desire.”
